News: The borrowed Englishman

In October 1988, Kenya was readying itself for a series of activities considering it was the month that President Daniel Moi was hitting ten years in office. It had to be celebrated.

Many months earlier – in March, Kenya had returned home from their second appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco, their first since 1972.

Upon return Coach Chris Makokha called it a day as the results from Morocco were not encouraging; they failed to score a goal in three games going down 3-0 to both Nigeria and Egypt and a 0-0 draw with Cameroon in the final Group ‘B’ game.

For the next six months, Kenya went into international hibernation, literally, kicking no ball.

Weeks to the President’s ten year anniversary – on 8 October, a team of 30 players was named to start training at the Kenya Science Teachers College by team manager Joe Kadenge to shape up for two ties against the Flames of Malawi who had been invited to grace the festivities.

With days approaching fast, and with the Federation still without a Coach, it was time for a quick fix.

Discussions after another, Kenya Breweries seconded 47-year old Englishman Tony Barnfield for the task ahead.

The pact was simple; no financial implications on the Federation's side except for stipends as Breweries would continue to foot his monthly obligation.

The Brewers had a similar arrangement in the mid 70s when they seconded Englishman Ray Wood to handle the National side from July 1975 soon after Joe Kadenge’s short stint as Coach ended in April. Wood stretched his services all the way to February 1976 before recoiling back to club duty.

Barnfield, a former Coach of Jordan, had proved his acumen seven months after signing a two year deal with the Brewers, as he won the CECAFA Club Championship held in Khartoum, Sudan in January of 1988.

Soon, Barnfield found the going at national level tough quickly registering a 2-0 loss in the first game to Malawi. He learnt the ropes quickly and reorganized his troops to lift the second tie 1-0. But Malawi, coached by Reuben Malola lifted the tenth Anniversary Cup with a 2-1 aggregate.

Soon after the games Barnfield returned to Coach Breweries as ‘discussions on the possibility of full-time deployment’ had not been discussed.

Weeks later, the Federation acquired the services of Mohammed Kheri as permanent Coach.
